Crafton Kindergarten Goes to Jail
On Tuesday April 1, 2008, the kindergarten classes at the Crafton Elementary School toured the Crafton Borough Police Department and Police cars.
Teachers Mrs. Janet Supko and Miss Jennifer Wood brought their 50 students for the tour.
Chief Rost, Patrolman Amendola, and Police Secretary Barbara Berkhouse gave the hour long tour. The children were shown the jail facilities. Miss Wood volunteered to be handcuffed and Mrs. Supko was fingerprinted. General safety topics such as bicycle safety and firearms (DO NOT TOUCH) were discussed. The children asked a variety of questions. See photos. The children viewed the police cars and were able to walk through unit #11-2. Junior police stickers were given to all of the kids and then they were off to the donut shop!!

Tasers
The Crafton Police department is presently having officers trained and certified with the new X-26 Taser.
Thru grants, the police department has been able to purchase 2 X-26 Tasers. The police department was also able to have Captain Mark Sumpter and Patrolman Timothy Harvison attend taser instructor training. Captain Sumpter and Patrolman Harvison will certify the rest of the police department in the use of the taser. Hopefully, the tasers will be in service by March 2008.
Patrol Car Video Cameras
The police department has obtained and installed 2 new in car video camera systems. The systems are worth approximately $10,000.00. The funds for the cameras were obtained by the Allegheny County Chiefs of Police Association on a grant thru Congressman Tim Murphy.
The police department has been using in car video cameras for approximately 18 years. During these 18 years, the cameras have been used in court for the prosecution of criminal cases. The cameras have also been used in civil lawsuits against the Borough of Crafton that were found to be false or unfounded.
In Car Laptop Computers (AKA MDT’s: Mobile Data Terminals
The police department has recently installed 2 new Dell laptops in the patrol vehicles. The computers were obtained thru a grant from Senator Wayne Fontana.
These in car laptops are officer’s direct access to the C.L.E.A.N. System, Commonwealth Law Enforcement Assistance Network and N.C.I.C.
Officers’ can immediately check on wanted persons, drivers license status in every state, stolen vehicles and articles.
As you can see, the police department is continually updating and purchasing new technology to ensure officer and citizen safety. The police department has been very fortunate to update our equipment with no cost to the residents via a variety of grants. |
